Lockout / Tagout
Always de-energize the circuit at the breaker, then lock it out and tag it so no one re-energizes while you work. Verify dead with a tester before touching wires.
Test Before Touching
Use a non-contact voltage tester or multimeter on a known-live source first, then test the target. Never assume a circuit is off.
Use Insulated Tools & PPE
Use insulated, rated hand tools and wear safety glasses and insulated gloves when working near energized parts.
One-Hand Rule
When probing energized circuits, keep one hand behind your back to prevent current across the chest.
Keep Water Away
Never work on electrical in wet conditions. Water drastically lowers skin resistance and increases shock severity.
Respect Grounding
Never remove the ground prong or bypass ground/neutral. Grounding and bonding protect against shock and fire.
Panel Safety
Don't open the main panel without training. Keep one hand away from grounded surfaces and never work in a panel standing on a wet floor.
Fire Response
For an electrical fire, cut power first if safe. Use a Class C (or ABC) extinguisher — never water on an energized fire.
When to stop and call a pro
- You smell burning or see smoke or scorch marks
- A breaker or GFCI keeps tripping after you've removed loads
- The panel is hot, buzzing loudly, or sizzling
- You feel a tingle or shock from any appliance or surface
- You're unsure about any step — stop and verify before continuing
