AC Breaker Keeps Tripping

The condenser or window unit trips its breaker — startup surge, loose lugs, or compressor wear.

Check the unit nameplate: is the breaker size within the MAX FUSE/BKR rating, and is the wire sized for the MCA?

AC plates list MCA (minimum circuit ampacity) and MAX breaker. Example: a 3-ton condenser with MCA 19.9A / MAX 30 on #10 copper is normal. An oversized breaker on undersized wire is a fire risk — never just install a bigger breaker.

Always de-energize the circuit and verify it's dead with a tester before opening any device. When in doubt, call a licensed electrician.
